Metolius Personal Anchor System – P.A.S. (Spring 2010)

$25.95

ALL CLIMBING SALES ARE FINAL. The Personal Anchor System – P.A.S. by Metolius is yet another example of Metolius’ commitment to products that are safer by design. It is designed to give the climber a high-strength anchor connection while threading for the lower – setting up a rappel or belaying. The PAS should replace the daisy chain that many climbers wear affixed to their harnesses for belay change-overs. Daisy chains should NOT be used because they are full-strength only when loaded in the end loops (intermediate pockets are only 300 lbf/1.3 kN). The PAS is super convenient and easily adjustable–just clip the loop which puts you at the correct height and . . . voila! When not in use – just leave it girth-hitched to your tie-in points – gather the extra loops and clip to the side for compact storage. The PAS is constructed from our super-strong – proprietary Power Webbing FEATURES of the Personal Anchor System – P.A.S. by Metolius Stronger and SAFER than daisy chains–individual loops are full-strength (Daisy chains are only strong end-to-end. The individual pockets on a daisy chain are for bodyweight only) More convenient and adjustable than using slings or quickdraws at the anchor Stows compactly Constructed from our super-strong – proprietary Power Webbing Includes Matrix Locking Carabiner Innovative device provides safe – convenient – adjustable attachment from the climber to any anchor Safer than daisy chains (Daisy chains are designed for body weight applications only) Safer – more convenient and more adjustable than using slings or quickdraws at the anchor Stows compactly Contrasting color on end loop simplifies use Available with or without the Element locking belay carabiner SPECIFICATIONS: Weight: 3.2 oz. Metolius BRD - Belay Rappel Device (Spring 2010)

Metolius BRD – Belay Rappel Device (Spring 2010)

$19.95

ALL CLIMBING SALES ARE FINAL. With the creation of the BRD by Metolius – we have achieved a simple – safe and bombproof belay/rappel device. The principle behind the BRD is very simple: as the load of a falling climber is applied – the carabiner is pulled into the scientifically engineered rope slots and the rope is squeezed between the carabiner and the BRD. The result is that a tremendous amount of friction is generated – allowing the belayer to easily catch long – hard falls with relatively light hand pressure. For rappelling – the BRD will give you a relatively slow and controlled (and we feel safer) rappel. If the rappel is moving too slowly – you can re-orient the device for a speedier descent. FEATURES of the BRD – Belay Rappel Device by Metolius A versatile – lightweight belay/rappel device w/engineered rope slots which means added control via increased friction on the rope Single or double rope compatible (8 mm to 11 mm ropes) Increased thermal mass and cooling fins to dissipate heat Hard anodized for longer wear CNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum Cooling fins to dissipate heat more efficiently Available with or without the Element locking carabiner SPECIFICATIONS: Weight: 2.9 oz. Omega Pacific SBG II Belay/Rappel Device

Omega Pacific SBG II Belay/Rappel Device

$18.95

New and improved, Omega Pacific’s SBGII is the smoothest & most versatile belay device available! Based on a design by Greg Lowe.By incorporating a rigid stem on this device, climbers can go from full lock-off to whipping rope out in a single, smooth action, no more binding up as the device tries to free itself! And the amount of friction can be completelyadjusted to suit your particular need. Does your climber outweigh you? Are you using skinny ropes? Then set up the brake line through the V-Slots! Clipping in short (into the oblong hole in the center of the stem) adds even more braking power. Climbing with fat ropes, a skinny partner or on low-angle slabs? Then belay off the U-Grooves for less friction and clip into the bottom hole of the SBGII! And if you’ve ever rapped on a single 8mm or 9mm ropes with a traditional belay device, you know what a fast and loose ride that can be! With the SBGII, wrap that skinny cord around the rigid stem and rappel figure-8 style for the ultimate in control and safety.”Unlike the keeper loops that all the other devices in our test utilize, the SBG II features a solid-metal stem, which renders the durability issue moot. The stem has two clip-in points ? one at the end for belaying and rappelling with single ropes, and one in the center for belaying with skinny double ropes. The tube features deep rope-controlling jaws on one side and rounder and feeding-friendly grooves on the other, so you can rig accordingly. The one downside to the SBG II is its complicated feature set ? take time to read the instructions so you get full value.”  -Climbing Magazine

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

$94.95

The Grigri Belay Device, invented by Petzl, introduced a revolutionary technique of belaying and descending. Others have tried to copy but the Grigri remains a quantum leap ahead and is still the premium choice for a self-locking belay. The Grigri allows belaying and lowering of a climber even where the latter is heavier than the belayer. A handle allows easy control of the device and smooth running of the rope. The Grigri works somewhat like an automobile seat belt: when movements are slow, the rope runs freely through the device; when there is a shock load, the Grigri locks, jamming the rope with a cam.

Trango Pyramid Belay Device

Trango Pyramid Belay Device

$16.95

The Trango Pyramid Belay Device could possibly be the best all around belay/rappel device on the planet. The Pyramid is light, compact, durable, and can smoothly handle just about any rope combination. Features machined cooling fins that work both to keep it cool and to make it less prone to being dropped. Pivoting center pin lets you flip it over to customize the feed of your ropes without affecting its stopping power. Rappeling is always controlled and jerk-free and the flat rope path virtually eliminates kinking. Elongated center pin makes it easy to rig with stiff or fat ropes and the burly retaining cable will last the life of the product.”The Trango Pyramid is a time honored design and for good reason ? its versatile and effective design still ranks at the top of the pack. The long tapered tube, which provides a smooth rope-bearing surface and features effective heat-dispersing metal fins, flips so that you can rig either the narrow end close to the biner for extra control or the wide end for quickly feeding rope. Using the narrow end can make for snaggy rope feeding, so judge your belay situation accordingly.” -Climbing Magazine

This unit works well on all ropes from skinny 8.0s to fat 10.5s – as usual all the DMM office personnel were roped in to test this comprehensively at the local wall, however the prize goes to Mr. Desroy for taking repeated falls onto a (backed-up) new 8.0mm rope…. It uses the same nylon covered retaining wire as that used on the Bug because this has a proven history of good durabilityFeatures:Weight: 88gDesigned for 8.0 to 10.5mm ropes.Manufactured from stainless steel using lost wax investment casting

The B-52 changes all that with extremely smooth starts and controlled descents all the way down. For advanced climbers and guides doing multi-pitch routes – the B-52 can be used as an in.autobloc in. device that will lock the rope automatically when the leader is belaying one or two seconds. Books and Calendars The Rock Warrior's Way: Mental Training for Climbers

Books and Calendars The Rock Warrior’s Way: Mental Training for Climbers

$18.95

Mental training is scarcely covered in the climbing literature, yet it is as important to performance as strength, flexibility, and technique. In his unique approach to mental training, Arno Ilgner draws essential elements from the rich “warrior” literature, as well as from sports psychology, and combines these with his extensive climbing experience to create The Rock Warrior?s Way.Here is a comprehensive program for learning how to focus your mental resources during a challenging climb. It includes step-by-step guidance on motivation analysis, information gathering, risk assessment, mental focus, and deliberate transition into action.Poor use of attention creates fear, which can manifest itself as anything from performance anxiety to sheer terror. By using attention more purposefully we can understand how fear is created, deal with it effectively, and free ourselves to get back in touch with a far more powerful motivating force: our love of climbing. We can then create the kind of unbending intention that leads to outstanding performance. The Rock Warrior?s Way is a revolutionary program for climbers who want to improve both their performance and their enjoyment of climbing.

Yakima Racks Lowrider Max Tower Rack System

Yakima Racks Lowrider Max Tower Rack System

$126

The Yakima LowRider Max is designed to fit specific Large/Oversided factory roof rails like those found on the Nissan X-Terra & PathFinder, as well as the Ford Explorer & Freestyle. The LowRider Max uses Vehicle Specific Claws (sold separately) to complete the mount (Please see the LowRider Claw C-1, C-2, C-3 to find your specific mount). This is the main difference between the LowRider Max and the basic LowRider mount from Yakima.   *If you have used the Yakima Fit Guide and the LowRider Max WAS NOT suggested, please order the basic LowRider, as the Max DOES NOT come with claws and will not attach your car. The basic LowRider fits 95% of factory roof rails* Check out the LowRider Max instructions for full details. Q. Is the LowRider MAX replacing the LowRider?  A. No, the LowRider MAX is VEHICLE SPECIFIC.  The LowRider MAX uses Claws that are fitted for specific vehicles. NO claws are included with the LowRider Max, where as the basic LowRider comes complete to fit smaller/non-oversized factory rails. Please check the Choose My Rack section of the website for information about your vehicle. If you see no indication to use the LowRider Max, then you need the LowRider. Q: What else is needed to complete a basic rack set up? A: If you are using the LowRider Max towers, you will need 4 total towers and a pack of 4 vehicle specific Claws (C-1, C-2, C-3; see Yakima Fit Guide), Cross Bars (44", 54", 66" & 77"; see fit guide). Also, a set of 4 Lock Cores is highly suggested! Q: Is there a way I can make the towers taller? A: There is no way to make the towers taller. Q: What sort of maintenance should I perform? A: Performing maintenance is always a good idea to protect your car and make your rack system last longer. Lubricate nuts, screws, or bolts with grease. Lubricate locks with graphite. Remove the rack when not in use, or at least periodically to clean the pads and the vehicles roof. Clean the rack periodically, especially in marine environments and where road salt is used. Q: How do I know if the towers are installed correctly? A: Check the safety steps in the LowRider instructions. These guidelines will help you determine if the installation is correct. Q: Will the rack make a lot of noise? A: Maybe. Wind noise is hard to predict, but it is more often an issue when the rack has little or no load. Yakima makes two products, the Fairing and Windjammer, to help control this situation. Large loads tend to dampen noise also. If you have a sunroof the fairing is a good way to help control air flow.

Tower Climbers Groups

The Ben Nevis Challenge, is it Right for Your Group?

Ben Nevis, the highest point in the U.K. While this is a mountain, no real mountain climbing is involved. The event is an uphill hike. Typically the event is sponsored as a charity fund raiser with challengers being funded by pledges to the charity if the challenger succeeds. Being the highest point in the U.K. some spectacular views are to be had.

Glasgow is the nearest airport. Transport from within the U.K. is generally had by taking the train at your local station. The Imperial hotel is a three star concern near Ft William. B&B’s are numerous as well. Most groups will opt for an arranged outing with a specialist company.  These companies will arrange for a coach to pick up your group at the airport if needed. Arrange lodgings, provide insurance, set the itinerary, and generally manage the experience.

In addition to walking up the trail to the summit for the Ben Nevis Challenge, a full range of climbing experiences is offered for more adventurous groups. Summertime climbers will find rock climbs from Difficult to Very Severe and lengths of 300 to 600 meters. The Tower Ridge is a tough scramble. The north face of Ben Nevis is for more advanced climbers. Guides can and should be used.

Wintertime climbers enjoy ice know for its crampon holding qualities.  Because it is constantly melting and freezing the consistency becomes ideal and “toffee-like”. In the wintertime the north face of Ben Nevis finds all manner of mountaineering skills used to navigate a variety of climbs. Advances in gear have made the various routes accessible to a range of climbers.

Every September the first Saturday is race day. The Ben Nevis Race attracts hill runners who compete for elapsed time. Runners who compete for 21 consecutive races earn a plaque. Other lodgings at Fort William include The Clan Macduff hotel and Rustic View Lochyside Bed and Breakfast. Camping parks are also in the area.

Whatever the composition of your group Ben Nevis offers a challenge. The trail sees everyone from leisure hikers looking for the best view in the U.K. to hill runners and even wheelchair athletes vying for lower times. Rock Climbing year round with a full range of mountaineering skills in the winter. Located in Ft.William and accessible to anyone in the U.K. by train, coaches are available from Glasgow airport. Packaged outings can be arranged by experienced outers or your experience can be custom tailored.

The community of Fort William is quite accustomed to the variety of climbers and any required gear can be purchased or rented. The weather can be an unexpected challenge so the shops will contain everything you need for rain, wind, snow, and even the occasional sunny day. The local constable even has “hill forms” similar to a flight plan for airplanes or float plan for boaters which details your trip. Many things are subjective, but this climb does provide the best view in the U.K. without qualification.
