Grivel Monster Ice Tool (Spring 2010)

Grivel Monster Ice Tool (Spring 2010)

$108

ALL CLIMBING SALES ARE FINAL. The Monster by Grivel was designed as a dry-tooling specific tool. Climbers in Europe have finally seen the folly of bending and breaking high performance ice climbing tools on difficult mixed routes where dry-tooling terrain comprises a more significant component of the route than ice. The hot-forged – one-piece head is not modular – and for the price interchangeable picks should not be expected. The beefy (5mm) pick has plenty of teeth on top and bottom – and is hardened to stand up to the abuse of the hardest rock. The shaft is cut from a slab of ChroMoly spring steel. Its shape offers plenty of good clearance and a variety of hand positions. The sticky – rubberized grip area presents both a fatigue-reducing Pull position (aka the Trucker Honk) and a Swing position to efficiently arc the tool into the ice. The grip has been modified from the original to be a bit more aggressive. The shaft may be customized for comfort (each Monster is supplied with a section of Snake to pad the edges of the shaft). Monster is available in a variety of colors and graphics. Specs & Tech: Blade: reverse – positive Materials: ChroMoly steel Construction: hot-forged head CE – Shaft Resistance: EN 13089 (plenty strong)

Mountaineers Books Alpine Climbing: Techniques to Take You Higher

$21.95

Description of Mountaineers Books Alpine Climbing: Techniques to Take You HigherThis intermediate-level guide addresses tools, skills, and techniques used in alpine terrain including rock, snow, ice, and glaciers at moderate altitude-approximately 5000 meters (16,000 feet) and lower. The technical protection systems are covered, of course. But 30 years of alpine climbing experience has convinced the authors that mastery-and safety-lie in the far more difficult task of knowing exactly which techniques to use, where and when. Therefore, they teach step-by-step decision-making skills, providing scenarios, checklists, and self-posed questions to inform the decision process. Alpine Climbing assumes some prior knowledge, primarily in rock climbing skills and techniques. Basic knots, belaying, rappelling, building rock anchors, leading, placing rock protection, and movement skills on rock: variations of these skills that are of particular value in the alpine environment are addres

Snow Climbing Games
Ideas for a 12 year old girl?

My daughter is turning 12 in october, were we live, its winter by then, which means there’s normally snow on the ground, or, its a warm day, it all depends. We still aren’t sure as to what would be a great birthday party idea. Here’s some more info:

-She’s already done: The Pool, Rock Climbing, And several house parties
-There might be 2-4 people in total

If u have any ideas as to what games might be fun at a hotel for this occation, please write a comment about that too! Thanx! (we were thinking about having a few of her friends sleepover, but only at a hotel, instead of our house)

Please comment and let us know b4 or on October 1st…Thanx!!
Some of my other questions were made by my daughter, therefore, they are about her boyfriend and such.

The hotel would be fun! You could wither see if there is a spa or pool in the hotel and do that, or just paint your nails, do facials, watch a movie, and have fun in the hotel.

Another fun idea is a scavenger hunt. You could do it on your street, or even in a mall. (If you do it in a mall, contact the mall manager and ask for permission. You may also need to talk to a few stores to ask them to give you guys clues.)

You could also have a campout, either in your backyard or in a park. (this wouldn’t really work if it was snowing)

Another idea is to get manicures/pedicures, go see a movie, and come home and sleep over. You could also order pizza or go out to dinner.

You could also take your daughter and her friends to an indoor water park (like splash lagoon or kalahari, both fun ones) for a day or overnight. It’s a ton of fun, and its heated.

I hope this helped and you have a fun birthday!

Mountaineers Books Climbing: Training for Peak Performance

$18.95

Description of Mountaineers Books Climbing: Training for Peak PerformanceThis book is for climbers of all ages, abilities, and interests who wish to improve their performance. It is for weekend warriors who enjoy 5.6s yet desire to lead 5.10s, and for mountaineers interested in moving faster at altitude. It is for ice climbers who want to move more efficiently over frozen terrain and big wall climbers who want to increase their stamina. The standard concept of training for climbing has long been, “just climb!” While that may suffice for a few gifted individuals, this philosophy has also resulted in countless climbers reaching performance plateaus and suffering recurring injuries. Even after the benefits of training began to be recognized, many of the regimens developed by climbers were physiologically unsound; some were downright dangerous. Climbing: Training for Peak Performance carefully details the foundation and fundamentals of nutrition for mind and body, flexibilit

32 Fun Things to Do Before You Are 11 Years Old

Creativity is so much more than playing a musical instrument, writing or painting a picture. Creativity can aid and influence every decision you make. The development and use of your own creativity is essential for your own future growth, and for that of the world in which you live.

I always find it surprising therefore, that so many of us find it so difficult to demonstrate or even admit to the existence of our creative side. And why is that so much of our creativity tends to diminish as we ourselves grow older?

Indirectly we are programmed both at home and school to toe the line, to conform and to be wary of signs of creativity that could make us more exciting as people, or outside of the norm of things. Instead we have to wait for suitable instructions, to be given permission before we can begin to find that lost creativity again. By developing your creative awareness, you will give yourself the permission to have fun, to enjoy the company of those around you and to really feel what life is about.

There is sufficient evidence to demonstrate that children at three or four years old are entirely free of any social or self restraints, and can therefore be witnessed literally walking on the grass at every opportunity. The sign that says ‘don’t’ is of little consequence to them. The grass is a playground, a green luxurious carpet, a soft landing place, a running track In fact; it is anything their imaginations can make of it. But it is never ‘a no go area!’

It is however, unfortunately, shortly after this age, that their parents, teachers or guardians; in fact anyone and everyone who claims to have their very best interests at heart, will slowly, or sometimes even frantically, begin introducing the sobering rules of society to these once uninhibited minds.

By the age of 10, children are already becoming more aware of the ‘rules of freedom’ and, in corresponding measure, their creativity now begins diminishing. The toy that was once their best friend in the world has now become only an acquaintance. They are told how to be creative rather than just allowing their imagination to flourish. For example at school they follow instructions on what to draw rather than have the freedom to be inspired by their own thoughts.

So before you are totally programmed into being an adult, start working on this list of fun things to do. It was compiled by my two step daughters aged 11 and 13, although there are some exclusions because they were positively dangerous.

1. Bake cakes or buns

2. Be in the middle of nowhere

3. Build a damn

4. Build a sand castle

5. Camp out in the garden

6. Chalk out a Hopscotch frame on your garden path and play it

7. Climb a tree

8. Collect frogspawn

9. Come first in anything

10. Do a handstand

11. Dress up and wear heels

12. Eat ice cream too fast and get brain freeze

13. Hang upside down from a tree

14. Have a snowball fight

15. Have a water fight

16. Jump a stream

17. Make a boat out of leaves and twigs and get it to float

18. Make a den in the garden

19. Make a mud pie – or a sand pie

20. Make a painting using your feet or hands

21. Make snow angels

22. Make something out of a cardboard box

23. Outwit your mum or teacher

24. Play pooh sticks

25. Ride a bike

26. See your favourite animal

27. Sing on a karaoke

28. Spin on a roundabout until you’re dizzy

29. Stand up for yourself

30. Stay up all night

31. Wake some worms up by stamping on the grass

32. Watch fireworks

If you are reading this as an adult and you still haven’t done some of these fun things then the time might be right for you now, at the very least get your own kids or your nephews and nieces involved. I can assure you making a boat out of leaves and twigs and making it float in the same pond as a few fancy toy speed boats was hilarious. Have fun!

The Basic Of Hermit Crab

Hermit crabs are fun pets to care for in your home. They used to be reserved for souvenirs from seaside vacations, but now they can be bought almost anywhere. They make wonderful starter pets for kids. They make a great alternative to the more traditional gerbils or hamsters, and they have a much longer lifespan than goldfish! Contrary to what you might expect if you are new to hermit crabs, it is possible to play with them, and they do have little personalities of their own. Do you think hermit crabs may make a great pet for you? Here are some helpful hints to get you started.

Before you get your crab, you need to get the basic equipment and supplies in place. First, they will need an aquarium for their house. Forget those teeny, tiny cages you see at the shops by the beach; hermit crabs really need a ten-gallon aquarium to be comfortable. If you are getting more than one crab, obviously you will be a bigger aquarium. A pet shop will be able to advise you on the best size for the number of crabs you will be housing. Make sure the aquarium has a snug fitting lid so your little friends do not make a run for it! Place a heating pad under the tank to keep your crabs feeling nice and tropical.

You will need something to cover the floor of the tank, as well. Three to four inches of sand works best, but you can also use crushed coral or reptile fiber bedding. If you use something other than sand, it is still a good idea to cover a portion of the floor with sand, so the crabs will have somewhere comfortable to go when they molt.

Now that you have the house and the flooring covered, you will need to get two shallow water dishes and a food dish. Shallow shells work well for this job. In one water dish, you should keep fresh water, and in the other, keep salt water, made with a marine aquarium salt solution. The dishes need to be shallow enough for the crabs to crawl into. A natural sea sponge is a nice addition to the fresh water dish, your crab will love to pinch it, and it will help keep the humidity levels up the aquarium.

The last thing you will need to gussy up your hermit crab home is some decorative wood pieces for the crabs to climb on. Coral and coconut shells also make great additions that your crab will love to play with.

Once you get your crab, to feed it, you will need to get some commercial hermit crab food. You can supplement that food with small pieces of fruit, meat, cereal, or fish. Additionally, make sure your crab gets crushed eggshells or oyster shells to boost their calcium level; it is important to keep their fragile skeletons strong. Cuttlebone is another option for this purpose.

To care for your crab, clean their water and food dishes daily, and spot the clean the tank when necessary. You will want to provide plenty of extra shells, in increasingly larger sizes, so your crab can change homes as they grow. Shells with wide openings are best. When your crab molts, remove the skin they have shed as soon as possible.

One optional, but useful accessory to get is a tank thermometer and humidity-measuring tool. Your hermit crab will be most comfortable when the temperature is kept around 72°F – 80°F and the humidity level is between 70% and 80%.

With these helpful hints, you are ready to get your hermit crab. All that is left to do now is come up with a name for your new pet!
