Your Cleaning Window

You may need to use ladders, ropes etc. So we must take care that window cleaning is done by a responsible person. Another thing, windows are usually made of glass. So there is also a risk off glass breaking and hurting the individual carrying out window cleaning. We can not avoid such risks if we think about carrying out this activity by ourselves but we can at least be prepared for such risks.

There are various equipments available in market to help you carry out window cleaning. For example, Pressure washers, Squeegees, Water Fed, T-Bars and sleeves etc. And if you don’t want to buy individual equipments, full window washing kits are also available in market which include Nylon case, 8ft reach pole, 4¡¨ scrapper with blades, Stainless Steel Channels etc. It is better to buy the full kit because this will prevent you from missing out any item. There are various ways of carrying out window cleaning. The most traditional method of window cleaning involves the following steps:

Based on all these factors the process of window cleaning will be different. In some cases there may be wooden work involved in the window make. So we have to choose our over all window cleaning method based on the overall construction of our windows.
It is comparatively easier and less risky to clean windows with less glass work. But it is always suggested to keep your first-aid box ready while window cleaning. For cleaning the wooden and wall area around glass work, we can use brush and vacuum cleaning as well. These areas are mostly covered with outside dust that can be removed easily with vacuum cleaner or rubbing off dust with brush or a dry cloth. But in case of wall area we must know the type of paint applied at the wall. For example, we can clean plastic paints with water but in case of distempers even wet cloth may not be used. And while selecting the chemical to use your wooden windows, please make sure that they are not too acidic or basic to destroy your woods.

Equilibrium of rigid bodies and friction-related: How far up the ladder can the man climb before slipping?

A uniform ladder of length 10m and weight W N rests with its base on a rough horizontal floor (coefficient of friction = 1/3) and its top against a smooth vertical wall. The ladder makes an angle x with the horizontal, where tan x = 1.7. A man of weight 2W N starts to climb the ladder. How far up the ladder can the man climb before slipping occurs? (Take this particular length as y.) Find, in terms of W, the magnitude of the least horizontal force that must be applied to the base of the ladder to enable the man to reach the top safely.

1. Take as reference point the place on the floor where the ladder rests. The wall is described as smooth, which is just another way of saying there’s no friction between wall and the top of ladder. Vertical forces on ladder are: its own weight; man’s weight; and the vertical component of floor reaction upon ladder. Since ladder is in equilibrium, all involved forces are balanced. Consequently, if combined weight of man and ladder is 3W, this is also the vertical component of floor reaction.

Likewise, horizontal forces must be balanced. Friction (a horizontal force) is f = µN, where N = 3W, vertical component of force supporting ladder; thus, f = 3µW; but µ = ⅓, so f = W. Reaction on wall can be only horizontal; any vertical component of force here would be due to friction, which is null between wall and ladder. Hence, wall reaction = f; in magnitude, of course; actually, it is directed as to oppose friction, since all forces have to be balanced.

Now, a body in static equilibrium should not move in any way, either translationally or rotationally. In other words, not only forces have to be balanced; net torque on body should be zero, as well. Using the reference point as pivot, about this point,

10 f sin θ − 5 W cos θ − 2 y W cos θ = 0,

where y is the distance the man goes up the ladder. Since f = W, and rearranging, the equation becomes

10 W sin θ = W(5 + 2 d) cos θ
2 y + 5 = 10 tan θ = 17
2 y = 12
y = 6.

2. With the man at the top of the ladder, vertical forces don’t change, but horizontal forces do. We’ll have to recalculate net torque. If R is wall reaction,

10 R sin θ = 5 W cos θ + 2 W × 10 cos θ = 25 W cos θ
10 R tan θ = 25 W
17 R = 25 W
R = 25/17 W.

Now, horizontal forces cancel out. Therefore, horizontal component of floor reaction is also 25/17 W. Since you’re asked the least horizontal additional force to be applied in order to avoid slipping, just subtract available friction force from R:

f’ = R − f = (25/17 − 1) W = 8/17 W.
