Metolius BRD - Belay Rappel Device (Spring 2010)

Metolius BRD – Belay Rappel Device (Spring 2010)

$19.95

ALL CLIMBING SALES ARE FINAL. With the creation of the BRD by Metolius – we have achieved a simple – safe and bombproof belay/rappel device. The principle behind the BRD is very simple: as the load of a falling climber is applied – the carabiner is pulled into the scientifically engineered rope slots and the rope is squeezed between the carabiner and the BRD. The result is that a tremendous amount of friction is generated – allowing the belayer to easily catch long – hard falls with relatively light hand pressure. For rappelling – the BRD will give you a relatively slow and controlled (and we feel safer) rappel. If the rappel is moving too slowly – you can re-orient the device for a speedier descent. FEATURES of the BRD – Belay Rappel Device by Metolius A versatile – lightweight belay/rappel device w/engineered rope slots which means added control via increased friction on the rope Single or double rope compatible (8 mm to 11 mm ropes) Increased thermal mass and cooling fins to dissipate heat Hard anodized for longer wear CNC machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum Cooling fins to dissipate heat more efficiently Available with or without the Element locking carabiner SPECIFICATIONS: Weight: 2.9 oz. Omega Pacific SBG II Belay/Rappel Device

Omega Pacific SBG II Belay/Rappel Device

$18.95

New and improved, Omega Pacific’s SBGII is the smoothest & most versatile belay device available! Based on a design by Greg Lowe.By incorporating a rigid stem on this device, climbers can go from full lock-off to whipping rope out in a single, smooth action, no more binding up as the device tries to free itself! And the amount of friction can be completelyadjusted to suit your particular need. Does your climber outweigh you? Are you using skinny ropes? Then set up the brake line through the V-Slots! Clipping in short (into the oblong hole in the center of the stem) adds even more braking power. Climbing with fat ropes, a skinny partner or on low-angle slabs? Then belay off the U-Grooves for less friction and clip into the bottom hole of the SBGII! And if you’ve ever rapped on a single 8mm or 9mm ropes with a traditional belay device, you know what a fast and loose ride that can be! With the SBGII, wrap that skinny cord around the rigid stem and rappel figure-8 style for the ultimate in control and safety.”Unlike the keeper loops that all the other devices in our test utilize, the SBG II features a solid-metal stem, which renders the durability issue moot. The stem has two clip-in points ? one at the end for belaying and rappelling with single ropes, and one in the center for belaying with skinny double ropes. The tube features deep rope-controlling jaws on one side and rounder and feeding-friendly grooves on the other, so you can rig accordingly. The one downside to the SBG II is its complicated feature set ? take time to read the instructions so you get full value.”  -Climbing Magazine

BlueWater Ropes 10.5mm Accelerator Dynamic Rope (2007)

BlueWater Ropes 10.5mm Accelerator Dynamic Rope (2007)

$211.95

The 10.5 Accelerator Rope by Bluewater is considered one of the better all around ropes on the market.  Bluewater designed the Accelerator with performance and durability as the most important aspects of the rope.  With its 10.5 sized sheath it can run over sharp rocks and take falls over and over without losing its elongation and still have superior handling.  Bluewater starts with the finest nylon fiber and processes it from start to finish with their proprietary Duration Thermal Stabilization (DTS). This is a precise technique that puts the nylon under a critical heat treatment that allows them to acheive a better balanced rope with incredible endurance to taking falls, running over sharp rock and just being used day in and out. Some of the 10.5 ropes are dry treated for ice climbing or mountaineering. The Double-Dry treatment is applied to each individual fiber in the sheath and core allowing just 11% water absorbtion (compared to the standard 20% – 30%) so your rope remains light and flexible under adverse conditions. Double-Dry also increases rope longevity and is an option on all of the dynamic cords. These ropes also include a Bluewater rope bag to keep it free from debris, dirt and makes it easier to carry to and from the crag.

Climbing Ropes Technique
Build Muscles?

I have a a requirement to climb a 20 foot free dangling rope(hands only).

Right now i cant climb past my own body height!
Can somebody tell me which muscles i should concentrate on building with weights so in 3 months i can accomplish my goal.

My upperbody strength is pretty bad,im sure its lack of this thats hampering my efforts and not technique!.I Can do 25 push-ups-Barely!!!

Thanx,Davy

working your biceps might help, but mostly you gotta work your back muscles.
people often dont realize it, but strenghtening your forearms and hands is very important in exercises like climbing a rope.

good luck!

Petzl Dragonfly Rope (Fall 2010)

Petzl Dragonfly Rope (Fall 2010)

$210

FEATURES of the Dragonfly Rope by Petzl Duratec Dry treatment helps prevent the rope from absorbing water – which can weaken a rope and make it difficult to handle in freezing conditions. Before a Petzl rope is constructed – the core and sheath strands are individually treated – providing water repellencty in case you find yourself in a deluge – snowfield or on a dripping ice chandelier. All Petzl ropes are butterfly coiled in the factory and are ready to use straight out of the package. This coiling method means no more tangled mess when you first use your new rope. Gone is the tedious operation of carefully uncoiling – flaking and reflaking your new rope – only to end up with annoying kinks. With a Petzl rope – just tie-in and start climbing. To help facilitate descents – the middle of each Petzl cord is marked with a black bar. Even with this marking – it’s sometimes a good idea to tie a knot at the end of the rope as an additional safety measure. Ropes Climbing Knots
Tying a rope on a tree branch…?

I have a rope that I am trying to hang up on a tree branch. I want to use this rope so that I can practice climbing it up using only my arms (training for a sport). The problem is, I am having trouble tying it onto the branch. I know there is a way that you just throw one end of the rope over the branch and then make a knot that slides up but I’m not sure how to do it. Any help? Thanks

Ok, throw the rope over the tree branch, so that you can hold both ends as they dangle down. Then tie a slip knot in one end of the rope. If you don’t know how to tie a slip knot, see this video:

http://iwillknot.com/slip_knot/

Once you have your slip knot in one end of the rope, thread the other end of the rope thru the center of the slip knot. Then tighten the slip knot around the rope, but not all the way tight. Leave some slack for the rope to slip through. The pull on the end of the rope you have just put thru the center of the slipknot. This will cause the slipknot to go up to the branch and tighten as you put pressure on the rope.

A couple of warnings I feel compelled to make here. Test the branch to make sure it’s good and strong. Even thick branches can be weaker than they look, before you do a climb.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
